Overview

HTC’s flagship handset for 2012 is the One X, which was unveiled at Mobile World Congress to much fanfare.  HTC has apologized for what their own management has described as a failure to provide the best quality products and that their focus would be different in 2012.  Looks like they were on to something here.

When people think of HTC or 4G devices they typically think bulky with an inadequate battery.  HTC was out to change that thinking with the One X.  The One X is incredibly slim (especially when you put it side-by-side with the Rezound/Amaze) and the white back makes it sparkle.  The phone packs a gorgeous and large HD display, LTE 4G connectivity, Beats audio built in, enhanced 8-MP camera, NFC capabilities, fast dual-core S4 processor, free cloud storage integration, and runs Android 4.0.

If you’re familiar with the most recent HTC handsets such as the HTC Rezound or HTC Amaze, you will notice quite a few changes from the Sense 3.5 interface you’re used to.  The One X also shakes off the capacitive menu button in favor of a 3 button design.

Design and Body

The phone feels just as big as it looks, it’s smooth and light, and some people may find it feeling a little cheap, but don’t be fooled, the shell is very tough and scratch-resistant.  One negative about the design is that you cannot remove the battery and HTC said that if they had created a removable back cover, they would never be able to make the phone as thin as it is.

Signal

Calls and speakerphone were clear and I didn’t experience any signal drop-off or dropped calls while using the device.

Sound

The One X is loud, but not overwhelming.  You’ll rarely if ever have a problem not hearing the ringtone.

Battery

The AT&T variant of the One X comes with a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, which clocks in at 1.5GHz per core.  The processor, along with the way the One X operates make for an efficient power management experience.  This is incredibly comforting for customers considering the HD display, 4G capabilities, and all other high-end features.  The phone should last all day, so don’t worry about having to bring a charger when you go out.

Screen Menus

The screen transitions are smooth, menu bars and icons are nice and clean, and once again, the screen is incredibly clear.

The Verdict … BUY IT OR FRY IT?

 

In the not too distant future, you might be able to be “Note Worthy” on an over-sized HTC handset instead of just the Samsung Galaxy Note.  A newly released report from BGR claims to have inside knowledge of a Galaxy Note competitor coming from Verizon this Summer or Fall.

The latest and greatest Smartphones at Verizon Wireless

HTC’s 5-inch smartphone/tablet hybrid would come with a Scribe pen and would feature a 1080P FULL HD display, quad-core Krait CPU, and will run HTC Sense 5.  There’s obviously no confirmation yet on the specs, but if they are, it would be remarkable.

When Samsung is not staging mock protests they’re busy upgrading their existing handsets to Android 4.0.  Customers in Australia will be seeing an Android 4.0 update pop-up on their handsets if they haven’t already.  The update will take the build to Android 4.0.3 and will sit on top of Samsung’s Touch Wiz interface.  This is an over-the-air update and is about 200MB so make sure you’re in a WiFi area.

In what seems to be a risky and surprising move, Samsung has unleashed a swarm of protesters with “Wake Up” signs outside an Australian Apple Store.

Of course this is a mock-protest as it seems Samsung is thinking differently with a new marketing campaign and taking right to Apple.  Samsung is pretty much mocking what it sees as the herd-mentality culture of Apple users, which is ironic because Samsung wants to create the same culture.

Let’s see how this plays out and how Apple will respond.

There’s always time for a good leak and this one is as good as any.  As we get closer to Samsung’s Unpacked Event one would imagine a tidal-wave of rumors and speculation, but in this case it seems legit.  Recently leaked images show a Galaxy S3 prototype in the flesh (or I guess, circuits).

Being that Samsung is taking a page (if not more) from Apple regarding the secrecy approach, this comes as more of a shock.

The video below also shows off some long-awaited specs including a quad-core 1.4GHz Exynos processor, 8-MP camera, 720P HD display, and NFC capabilities.  The phone also looks to be running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Just as a reminder, the event will be held May 3rd in London.

After what seemed like a year of hype, rumor, and speculation Samsung is finally gearing up to unveil the long-awaited Galaxy S3.  If you’re wondering, well, didn’t the GS2 just launch in the States late last year?  The answer would be YES, but internationally it was out for long before that.

Samsung sent out an invite to press outlets for a Samsung Unpacked event to “come and meet the next Galaxy.”  The event will be held in London on May 3rd and will be streamed live via Facebook.

It’s finally time to put some of the rumors to bed, but be ready for a barrage of “leaks” until the event finally goes live.

 The image you see above is allegedly of the Samsung Galaxy S3 and looks pretty much like previous Galaxy S models, except with an Ice Cream Sandwich launcher.

Call me skeptical, but I don’t think this is the soon-to-be-unveiled Galaxy S3.

Time will tell if this “leak” is true or fake.

Earlier I wrote that the LG Viper would be Sprint’s first LTE handset and would launch on the 22nd.  It now looks like Sprint customers will have more variety than anticipated on that day.  According to the above image, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus will also release that day.

 It will be interesting to see if this multiple-release strategy will pan out for Sprint.
